Investors' confidence drop sharply accross Asia-Pacific in Q1 2008. Over all the Asian index highlighted that investors' confidence had declined by 7.4% accross the region to 125 out of 200 for Q1 2008, down from 135 in Q4 2007 and from the high of 141 as per ING record in Q3 2007.
Despite a drop in confidence level among Asian investors due to a global credit crunch and a crisis in U.S, the over all sentiment going into 2008 remained vigorous with investors in India, China, Hongkong and Philippines among the most optimistic. India continues to remain the most optimistic accross the asia pacific according to ING Investor Sentiment Index. It had the highest level of confidence with 3% and .9% respectively. An overwhelming 93% of Indian investors expect the overall investment sentiment will be better in 2008.
While in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan the least optimistic. An increasing number of investors have shifted away from riskier investments such as stocks for the historic safe haven options of gold, REITs and mutual funds in the past three months.
Survey showed that global uncertainty was driving investors towards low risk investments and many were developing a cautious approach.
Fifty-four (54%) percent of investors favored low-risk investment compared to medium-risk (47%) and high-risk (38%) investments.
